Ohio in June

As summer officially begins in Ohio, the state blossoms into a playground of festivals, outdoor adventures, and delicious seasonal treats. June marks the start of a vibrant few months when Ohioans and visitors alike can experience the very best the Buckeye State has to offer. From lively cities to charming small towns, scenic parks to sandy beaches, there is an abundance of summer fun to be had all across Ohio.

Festivals Galore

One of the highlights of an Ohio June is the plethora of festivals and events that take place. Kicking things off is the Troy Strawberry Festival (June 1-2), celebrating the ruby red fruit with parades, pageants, and plenty of strawberry treats. Berry lovers can continue the fun at the Newark Strawberry Festival (June 3-5) and the London Strawberry Festival (June 20-22).

For a truly unique experience, head to the Washboard Music Festival in Logan (June 13-15). This annual Father’s Day weekend festival celebrates the humble washboard’s role in American music with live performances ranging from Dixieland jazz to zydeco.

Aviation fans will want to mark their calendars for the Dayton Air Show (June 22-23), a spectacular event featuring aerobatic performances, historic aircraft displays, and more. Just up the road, the Ohio Challenge Hot Air Balloon Festival in Middletown (June 14-17) offers the magical sight of colorful hot air balloons drifting across the sky.

Art, music, and cultural festivals abound as well. The Columbus Arts Festival (June 7-9) showcases outstanding artists and performers in a beautiful riverfront setting. Meanwhile, the Simply Slavic Festival in Youngstown (June 14-15) celebrates the city’s Eastern European heritage through music, dance, food, and more.

Outdoor Pursuits

With warm temperatures and long daylight hours, June is perfect for embarking on outdoor adventures in Ohio’s parks and natural areas. Hike through lush forests, paddle along winding rivers, or just relax in the shade of towering trees at incredible state parks like Hocking Hills, Mohican, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Keep an eye out for native Ohio flora and fauna too. June visitors may spot whitetail deer, brilliant wildflowers in bloom, and migratory songbirds that have returned for the summer season. Special events at state parks include guided hikes, outdoor skills workshops, and evening campfire programs.

For a truly unique experience, travel to Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island and go underground at Perry’s Cave. This fascinating cave system winds below the island’s surface, showcasing incredible geological formations and even a underground lake. Above ground, visitors can rent bicycles, kayaks or golf carts to explore the charming island town and its array of restaurants, shops and beaches.

History Comes Alive

Ohio’s rich history also springs to life in June through special events and living history attractions. Enjoy a taste of 19th century life at Ohio Village in Columbus. This amazing replica town features costumed interpreters, historic tradespeople, and special events that let visitors step back in time. Stop by in June for activities celebrating Father’s Day on the 18th as well as Juneteenth on the 16th.

Speaking of Juneteenth, don’t miss the Ohio History Connection’s Juneteenth Jubilee Day Festival on June 16. This free event commemorates the end of slavery in the United States through music, storytelling, presentations, vendors, and family activities.

Civil War history is on full display at the Ohio Valley Frontier Days (June 1-2) in Steubenville. The annual festival takes guests back to 1787 at Historic Fort Steuben, with reenactors, blacksmiths, woodworkers and other interpreters depicting life on the Ohio frontier.

Delicious Summer Flavors

No Ohio summer would be complete without indulging in the state’s wonderful seasonal foods and flavors. As June’s warm days arrive, farm stands, u-pick farms, and farmers markets burst with fresh local produce.

Strawberry season kicks off in June, with orchards and patches welcoming visitors to pick their own juicy berries. Follow that up with fresh butter pecan or lemon custard ice cream from legendary Ohio ice cream stands like Dietsch Brothers in Cincinnati, Handel’s in Youngstown, or Mallorca in Cleveland.

June also marks the return of beloved summer festival foods like crispy fries, gooey caramel apples, and tangy lemon shakes. After filling up on all the fried and sugary treats, guests can enjoy lighter fare like freshly squeezed lemonade, piled-high deli sandwiches, or creamy fresh cheese from Ohio’s many artisan cheesemakers.

Of course, no discussion of Ohio food in June would be complete without mentioning the official start of grilling season. From sizzling burgers and brats to charred corn on the cob and veggie kabobs, Ohioans will be firing up their grills all summer long.

Summer Sports & Outdoor Fun

As winter’s chill fades away, outdoor sports and recreation heat up across Ohio in June. The state’s golf courses welcome back players with lush green fairways and perfect scoring conditions. Try to squeeze in a round at one of Ohio’s award-winning public courses like Longaberger in Nashport or Renaissance in Norwalk.

If baseball is your game, be sure to catch the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians playing at their downtown stadiums. There are great minor league teams to cheer for across Ohio as well. Head to an Akron RubberDucks or Mahoning Valley Scrappers game and enjoy cheap tickets, fun promotions, and that nostalgic smell of fresh-cut grass.

Craving an adrenaline rush? Go skydiving with Start Skydiving in Middletown or give wakeboarding a try at Wake Nation Cincinnati. For the ultimate in aerial thrills, take a heart-pounding ride in a biplane with Goodfolk & O’Tymes Biplane Rides in Xenia.

Landlubbers can take part in Ohio’s growing popularity of pickleball. Courts have been popping up across the state, like at the new Pickle Lodge and Aces complex in Cincinnati. Check local parks and recreation centers for open play times too.

Incredible City and Small Town Charm

June’s cities and small towns offer charming environments to soak in the summer vibe. Stroll the brick streets of towns like Historic Roscoe Village and take in the well-preserved historic architecture. Or spend an afternoon browsing the boutiques, galleries, and cafes of walkable urban neighborhoods such as Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine, Tremont in Cleveland, and the Short North Arts District in Columbus.

Head to the open-air West Side Market in Cleveland to sample quintessential summer treats like fresh produce, artisanal baked goods, and frozen custard. In Columbus, the Moonlight Market held the third Friday of each month features live music, street food, local makers, and a lively celebration of summer.

No summer is complete without at least one county fair. Luckily, many of Ohio’s county fairs start up in June, like the fun Medina County Fair (June 26 – July 2) and the Hartford Fair (June 24-July 1) which bills itself as Ohio’s oldest continuous fair.

No matter where your June adventures take you in Ohio, you’ll find the perfect blend of mouthwatering food, toe-tapping music, family-friendly festivals, outdoor splendor, and enough summer fun to create lasting memories. From amusement parks and waterparks to sandy beaches and hiking trails, there is an abundance of summer playgrounds to explore across the Buckeye State.
