Texas in April: Celebrating Spring with Bluebonnets, Festivals and Eclipse Events

Texas in April

As winter fades and spring blooms across the Lone Star State, April is an ideal time to experience the best of Texas. With warm, sunny days and comfortable evenings, this month offers ideal conditions for enjoying the great outdoors and the state’s many events and celebrations.

The Return of the Bluebonnets

One of the most iconic sights of a Texas spring is the annual bloom of the state flower, the bluebonnet. Each April, these beautiful blue flowers carpet fields, roadsides and parks across the state in a brilliant purple-blue hue. For visitors, catching sight of seemingly endless fields of bluebonnets is a quintessential Texas experience not to be missed.

The peak blooming period typically falls in early to mid-April, though it can start as early as late March depending on rainfall and temperatures. Some of the best places to view the bluebonnet splendor include the official Bluebonnet Trails near Ennis, Brenham, Chappell Hill and Burnet. These winding driving routes take you through picturesque countryside blanketed in the iconic blooms.

Many small towns across the state’s Hill Country and East Texas regions celebrate the bluebonnet season with festivals, events and picturesque photo opportunities. The charming town of Chappell Hill even dubs itself the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas” and hosts the Official Bluebonnet Festival the second weekend in April.

Festivals Galore

Beyond bluebonnet festivities, April is packed with unique events celebrating everything from art cars to kites to strawberries. One of the quirkiest is the Houston Art Car Parade on April 13th, where outrageously decorated vehicles cruise through the streets in a celebration of artistic expression on wheels.

For a more traditional experience, head to the ABC Kite Fest in Austin’s Zilker Park on April 14th. This long-running event fills the sky with hundreds of colorful kites and includes kite contests and family activities. Or get a taste of Texas agriculture at the Poteet Strawberry Festival from April 12-14 in the “Strawberry Capital of Texas,” featuring strawberry treats, live music and rodeo events.

In San Antonio, the city’s biggest annual bash, Fiesta San Antonio, takes over from April 18-28. This 10-day extravaganza honors the region’s Hispanic roots with food, music, parades and more. The sheer number of events makes Fiesta an experience like no other.

The Great American Eclipse

However, the undisputed highlight of April 2024 in Texas will be the Great American Eclipse on the 8th. This highly anticipated total solar eclipse will be visible across a stretch of the state, including cities like Waco, Burnet and Dripping Springs. During the peak of the eclipse, the moon will completely block out the sun for nearly two minutes, creating an eerie mid-day twilight.

Towns and cities along the path of totality are planning major events and festivals to celebrate this celestial phenomenon. Visitors can expect huge crowds and should book accommodation and make travel plans well in advance. The town of Granbury is hosting a “Lunch in Black” viewing party with music, food and special eclipse-viewing glasses.

For those fortunate enough to be in the path of totality, the total eclipse promises to be a breathtaking and unforgettable experience. Proper eye protection like special solar filters or eclipse glasses is absolutely essential when viewing the partial phases before and after totality.

Spring Getaways

Beyond the eclipse, April offers a wonderful window for getaways before summer’s peak temperatures and crowds arrive. The wildflower blooms, comfortable temperatures in the 70s and 80s, and numerous events make it an ideal time for a trip.

One great option is exploring the Texas Hill Country, with its gently rolling hills, spring-fed swimming holes, charming towns and plethora of wineries and B&Bs. Before the summer heat sets in, April allows for pleasant days of hiking, swimming, winery touring and more without oppressive temperatures.

Many Hill Country resorts offer spring specials and packages for a relaxing getaway amid the wildflower scenery. Places like Lake Austin Spa Resort, Horseshoe Bay Resort and various guest ranches make appealing bases for exploring the region’s natural beauty and amenities.

Gulf Coast beach towns also shine in April before the summer crowds descend. Head to Galveston, Corpus Christi or Port Aransas to enjoy sun, sand and surf without the peak pricing and congestion. Inland cities like Austin and San Antonio similarly offer comfortable April weather for roaming urban trails, patios and attractions.

Whether your interests are nature, festivals, history or relaxation, April provides an outstanding time to experience the diversity of travel opportunities across Texas. With wildflowers in bloom, celestial wonders on display and a full calendar of lively events, this spring month allows visitors to sample the very best of the Lone Star State.
